Islamic Traditions After a Baby Is Born
Tahnik. The Prophet (peace be upon him) would soften a date and rub a little of it on the palate of a newborn, then make dua for the child. This is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari 5467 and Sahih Muslim 2145. Many families still ask an elder or a person of knowledge to do it.
Naming on the seventh day. The child is customarily named on the seventh day after birth, though naming earlier is also practised and reported. Parents are encouraged to choose a name with a good meaning.
Aqiqah. An animal is sacrificed on the seventh day and the meat distributed to family, neighbours and those in need. The common practice is two animals for a boy and one for a girl, though scholars differ on whether that is required or preferred. If the seventh day passes, aqiqah can still be performed later.
Shaving the head. The head is shaved on the seventh day and the weight of the hair in silver given in charity. The amount is small, and most families give the equivalent value.
The adhan in the ear. Reciting the adhan into a newborn’s right ear is very widely practised, but the narration it rests on, reported from Abu Rafi’, is graded weak by many hadith scholars. Some hold that acting on it remains acceptable given how long it has been practised; others hold that a weak narration is not a basis for a recommended act.
